Il “PUMO” salentino è l’emblema della tradizione salentina come portafortuna. Il suo termine deriva dal latino e significa frutto, in onore del culto della dea POMONA, protettrice di tutti i frutti. Anche leggende narrano che il pumo, che rappresenta un bocciolo del fiore di “Acanto”, è simbolo di prosperità e dì fecondità, ma anche di immortalità e resurrezione.
La natura del bocciolo è difatti quella di una nuova forma di vita che sta per nascere, desiderando quindi prosperità. Da tradizione, i “Pumi” venivano collocati sui balconi o sui cornicioni, più in generale sull’uscio di casa, come buon augurio alla famiglia residente.

The Salento "PUMO" is the emblem of the Salento tradition as a lucky charm. Its term derives from Latin and means fruit, in honor of the cult of the goddess POMONA, protector of all fruits. Legends also say that the pumo, which represents a bud of the "Acanthus" flower, is a symbol of prosperity and fertility, but also of immortality and resurrection.
The nature of the bud is in fact that of a new form of life that is about to be born, therefore desiring prosperity. Traditionally, the "Pumi" were placed on balconies or ledges, more generally on the door of the house, as a good wish for the resident family.
